Lower Prut Reserve: bird migration season

· 1 min read

The Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve, recognised in the UNESCO network, protects one of South-Eastern Europe's most valuable wetlands. During migration months, pelicans, egrets, and ducks of many species pause here in impressive numbers, turning the landscape into a true theatre of nature.

Ornithologists from Moldova and abroad come each year to document migration routes and contribute to monitoring programmes. The data collected helps adapt conservation measures to climate change.

Riverside communities benefit indirectly from protecting the area: birdwatching tourism brings local income, and seasonally flooded meadows filter water and reduce flood risk. It is a concrete example of balance between conservation and sustainable development.

For visitors, the best times are early morning or dusk, when birds are most active. Local guides recommend binoculars, neutral-coloured clothing, and respect for no-nesting zones.
